Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to ditch the family and head over to Paddington for a morning listening to the stories of 12 published children/young adult authors. They are currently in the throws of having a new book published, and took time out to tell the audience interesting facts about the books, that had found their ways into the plot of the book, from intimidating chickens to biting wolf cubs to girls turning into frogs. It was a really interesting event, held at the Black Cat Books Cafe, which is a great venue because of all their support they show for the children's/youth book industry here in Brisbane.
This is how SCBWI put it: "An inaugural international SCBWI event, Inside Story will be launched simultaneously around the world, including bookshops in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Meet & be entertained by our loved and acclaimed children’s authors & illustrators from Qld and northern NSW as they give insights into the stories behind the creation of their books. There will be prizes, cake, book signings and balloons - it's a mini festival!"
There was a great big cake and an opportunity to talk to the authors... and prizes! I won Pamela Rushby's book 'Circles of Stone', which I've just started, and a very intriguing prize from the author and illustrator J.R. Poulter. I won the opportunity to have my name in one of her next books as a character - I thought fabulous, but for her let's use a boys name, so Sinjon will have his name in the book, how fun is that!
