PRINTED BOOKS
When I receive the manuscript, I draw out the characters roughly to get personality into the story from the onset. Little Dragon was a bit different, because the author had seen one of my dragon illustrations before and asked whether I could use him as the basis of her story. This was a great way to go, and before long I had sketched out the rough pages and began refining them to the text. Little Dragon's Birth Day illustrations are primarily chalk pastels with a little pencil line work to help define the details. I work in many mediums, but for blending and softness, pastels are always my first choice. Especially when the story calls for it.
After working traditionally for the most part, I scan the pages and then make them ready for printing. Some colours and lines lose their details in the scans, hence the use of pencil and a little image retouching here and there.
